7 April 05: Lord willing an' the crick don't rise...

We're on high ground in NJ, but our house is quirky*, so whenever the rain is pounding and the ground is this supersaturated, we get a flood through the once-garage door or---even more spectacularly---water squirting through the once-garage wall on the uphill side. The once-garage is where all our bookshelves are.

We've had a lot of panicky times but nowhere near the panicky times the folk on the flood plain below us have had.

The crick crested yesterday. It was sunny all day today and the water was visibly subsiding. Today the folk on the floodplain started going back to their flooded homes to clean up the muck.

But the weather report says more heavy rain tomorrow. All our local shaman is [dancing/praying/asking/wishing] for is two days' grace before the next heavy rain. May I ask for your good [thoughts/wishes/prayers/dances]? I'm not asking for us; we've made it through.

But all our folk on the floodplain need two days' grace. If you know somebody who can do a hold-off-the-rain-for-two-days dance, we would be ever so much obliged.

*quirky here is my polite way of saying "badly thought out." Our house is just below the crest of a hill but its roof slants to the uphill side, which is why any heavy rain when the ground is already supersaturated can send water squirting through the once-garage wall.

Off-site Off chance we lose power (as we have all too many times under the same circumstances), here are cool things I've been sent. Hang onto 'em for me, will ya?

[This is a 1st draft. I'll clean it up when I have a chance. I'm just here to post some nifty links...and to hope my new ISP is on higher ground than my last one was. Expect changes.]

[27 May 05 edit: Thank you all for the anti-rain dances and the two day's grace. Our folk on the flood plain thank you: Nobody's house (that we know of) will have to be demolished because of this April's flood.]
